Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge

Established in 1938, this 8,000-acre fresh water refuge borders the Atlantic Ocean on the east and Back Bay on the west. The barrier islands feature large sand dunes, maritime forests, fresh water marshes, ponds, ocean beach, and large impoundments for wintering wildfowl. These tranquil habitats can be accessed by marsh trails, bikes, a boardwalk overlook, and the beach itself. Back Bay is located approximately 18 miles south of the resort area. Back Bay Tram Tours run from April 1st and continue through October 31st. Please contact us for further information.

Back Bay Restoration Foundation Tram Tours

During spring, summer and fall, the tram departs at 9:00 A.M. and takes roughly one hour to reach the contact station in False Cape. While passing through the refuge, passengers are likely to see a variety of wildlife, which many BBRF tram drivers can help identify, including: ducks, geese, swans, white-tailed deer, rabbits, foxes, turtles, ospreys, egrets and great blue herons. Once in False Cape, passengers have two hours to hike west to Back Bay, east to the beach and Atlantic Ocean, or south to Wash Woods. Anywhere is great for a picnic. In False Cape State Park, the passengers will be greeted by a ranger or volunteer who will mention the assets of the park, including: historical sites, and wildlife such as those seen in the refuge, feral horses and feral pigs. The tram returns to Little Island City Park at approximately 12:45 P.M.

Cruise the Creek Boat Trips

A 50-passenger pontoon boat, the Rudee Explorer, provides a glimpse of the last undeveloped salt marsh in Virginia Beach, the Owls Creek Salt Marsh. False Cape State Park

This 4,321-acre area is a mile-wide barrier spit between Back Bay and the Atlantic Ocean, in the extreme southeast corner of Virginia Beach. It has 6 miles of unspoiled beaches, 12 primative campsites, and 9 miles of hiking/biking trails. Access is through Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge and is limited to hiking, biking, or boating. First Landing State Park

Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge

Comprised on nearly 1110,000 acres of forested wetlands, canals, ponds, lakes, sphagnum bogs, evergreen shrubs, and marshy boarders, the Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge is the largest entity of the Coastal Phase of the Virginia Birding and Wildlife Trail. The refuge may be explored via 40 miles of nearly level trails and roads. Three-mile-wide Lake Drummond, located in the heart of the Swamp, is one of only two natural lakes in Virginia. The Great Dismal Swamp is a naturalist’s dream. Over 200 species of birds. While searching for the refuge’s many birds, event the most casual observer will encounter some of the Refuge’s 87 species of reptiles and amphibians. Small mammals are abundant, and large species such as black bear, bobcat and river otter are encountered with unusual frequency.

Grommet Island Beach Park & Playground

JT’s Grommet Island Beach Park and Playground For EveryBODY is a 100% handicap accessible oceanfront park in the City of Virginia Beach. It is the first of its kind in America.

The idea was born when Virginia Beach native Josh Thompson and his family wanted to go to the beach. But Josh had to stay behind because of the difficulty of getting his wheelchair to the beach, across the sand and down to the surf. Josh, an avid surfer, was diagnosed in 2006 with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, better known as ALS or Lou Gehrig’s Disease. The Thompson family wondered how many others never get their day at the beach for the same reason. Thus, the park idea was born.

Kayak Nature Tours

Kayak Nature Tours offer 2 1/2-hour trips that are great for beginners and families. No Experience Necessary! All kayaking gear is included in the price ($40 to $45/pp). Kiptopeke State Park

Located on the eastern shore of Virginia, this park offers recreational access to the Chesapeake Bay and the chance to explore a unique coastal habitat featuring a major flyway for migratory birds. Since 1963, Kiptopeke has been the site of bird population studies. Sponsored by the Coastal Virginia Wildlife Observatory and licensed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, volunteers capture, examine, weigh, band and release resident and migratory birds each year from mid-August through November. In the raptor research area, hawks, kestrels, osprey and other birds of prey are observed and banded from September through November. Kiptopeke’s hawk observatory is among the top 15 nationwide.

Little Island Park

Located at Sandbridge Beach on the Atlantic Ocean, this bathing beach provides a chance to frolic in the surf and ample opportunity to view many diving ducks, gulls, and Atlantic bottle-nosed dolphins. Munden Point Park

Munden Point Park is a 100-acre district park located on the North Landing River, a major leg of the Intercoastal Waterway. The park is open from 6:30 am until sunset. Facilities include five large shelters, mini-shelters, a boat ramp, a disc golf course, three ball fields, three basketball courts, a fitness trail, three playgrounds, six horseshoe pits, boat rentals, volleyball stations, vending machines, and restrooms. An outdoor amphitheater with electrical outlets is also available by reservation for weddings, classroom instruction, or other special events.

National Wildlife Refuge

Located at the tip of the Delmarva Peninsula, this area is one of the most important avian migration funnels in North America. Each fall, like colorful clockwork, the refuge is the scene of a spectacular drama as millions of songbirds and monarch butterflies and thousands of raptors converge on their voyage south. Favorable weather patterns push migrating species through the area in waves. Clouds of tree swallows swirl over ponds and flame orange and black-winged monarch butterflies float aloft. Protected habitats such as these provide critical stopover areas where birds and butterflies can rest and feed before resuming their arduous journey.

Princess Anne Wildlife Management Area

Three tracts comprise the Princess Anne WMA but only two of the tracts are accessible by car—the Trojan Marsh and the Whitehurst Tract. The third tract, Pocahontas Marsh, is a group of marshy islands. The Trojan Marsh Tract has a boat launch and channel to open water where the wildlife watcher with a boat can access the marshes of Back Bay. The Whitehurst Tract is a patchwork of marshes, weedy and cultivated fields, narrow freshwater impoundments, and pine woodland. Because of the mixed character of the habitat, this area includes lots of woodland edge; both birds and white-tailed deer are plentiful. During summer, listen for northern bobwhite and watch for American and fish crows, raptors, and passerines. In summer, great egrets hunt the pond edges, to be joined in winter by several species of puddle ducks.

Rides at Fat Frogs Bike and Fitness

For 25 years fresh, local produce has been available at the Virginia Beach Farmers' Market.

The Farmers Market, located at the corner of Dam Neck and Princess Anne Roads, is a year-round open air market featuring fresh local and regional produce, a butcher shop, a dairy store, organic grocery,wild bird store,seafood, florist,candy and bakery, speciality garden shops, restaurant and more. Our restaurant is open 7 days a week, 7:00 am - 4:00 pm. Merchants' hours vary. Generally, they are open for business 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday- Saturday and Noon - 5 p.m. on Sunday. Bring your family to a variety of special events held March thru December. Hoedowns are held on Friday evenings April - October.

Wave Riding Vehicles Surf Camp 2010

The 8th annual Surf Camp teaches children ages 5+ who are novice to advance surfers. They will learn the techniques under the supervision of Professional Surfer, Brendan Petticrew and his team of CPR trained Instructions. Students can be expected to learn the proper techniques for paddling out, catching waves and standing up as well as surf etiquette and ocean safety. It includes the surf board rental from Wave Riding Vehicles. Upon completion of the 3 or 5 day camp, each student will receive a certificate and a camp package filled with t shirts, coupons, signed autographs and a finale Pizza Party. If your child is searching for the ultimate summer camp experience while you are vacationing in Virginia Beach, then this camp is for them! It will be an unforgettable experience that is safe, fun and rewarding!

Whale Watching Boat Trips

Woodstock Dog Park

This is a one acre fenced dog park. The park is open from 7:30 am until sunset. There is a $5 annual fee. Dogs must also show proof of license and vaccination. You may get the annual pass at the Maintenance Office at the dog park.
