Fluid lines. Vivid colors. Flawless design. Modern art that pleases beyond comprehension. Art of Glass 2, a world-class visual extravaganza of contemporary art glass masterpieces, returns to Virginia Beach and the Hampton Roads region.
From April through August 2009, the Contemporary Art Center of Virginia in Virginia Beach, the Chrysler Museum of Art in Norfolk, and the region-wide Virginia Arts Festival will partner to host a landmark art event: Art of Glass 2. With exhibitions by some of the finest glass artists in the world, Art of Glass 2 promises
to amaze, delight and inspire. The major partners are joined by more than 20 regional affiliates in this glass exhibition that will showcase Hampton Roads as the center for glass art on the East Coast. At the core of Art of Glass 2 is a series of major exhibitions at the Chrysler Museum of Art and the Contemporary Art Center of Virginia and glass-themed performances presented under the auspices of the Virginia Arts Festival.
This is the second Art of Glass event to be held in Hampton Roads. In 1999, the major arts institutions of Hampton Roads joined together to present the inaugural Art of Glass, which proved to be one of the most successful examples of region-wide partnership in the area. The event was created to transform Hampton Roads into a recognized center for glass art through a series of exhibits and performances.

This year’s featured works for the event include the glimmering shapes of Hank Murta Adams, Dante Marioni’s fabricated vessels, cups, bowls, and vases, and Lino Tagliapietra’s Italian glass works. Additional artwork on display will include figurative busts, wall murals, canister figures, glass wall hangings and lampwork. The Contemporary Art Center will also feature “1999-2009: A Region Collects,” which highlights the finest glass art acquired by local collectors since the first Art of Glass event in 1999.
The exhibition at the Contemporary Art Center of Virginia opens Friday, April 24, and runs through August 23. In addition to the glass exhibits, the
Contemporary Art Center of Virginia will hold a series of special events. On July 19, families will receive free admission to the galleries to participate in a hands-on project inspired by the exhibitions. In August, the Off Center Glass traveling hot shop will demonstrate a variety of glassblowing techniques. Visitors to the event can watch live demonstrations, learn about glassblowing techniques, and make requests for specific creations.
